In 2012, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to mobilize global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical problem solving for sustainable development, including the design and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Following their adoption, the SDSN is now committed to supporting the implementation of the SDGs at local, national, and global scales. Led by Prof. Jeffrey D. Sachs, leader in sustainable development and senior UN advisor, the global network aims to accelerate joint learning and help to overcome the compartmentalization of technical and policy work by promoting integrated approaches to the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world. The SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, the private sector, and civil society.

Spanning six continents, the SDSN currently draws upon the knowledge and educational capacity of more than 600 member institutions. They work together to direct a multidimensional global network that attempts to address some of the world’s most pressing problems.

The official launch of the SDSN Greece, anchored within the 3rd International SDSN Mediterranean Conference (MED Solutions), will be held on September 7-8, 2017, in Athens, Greece.  The event is co-organised by ICRE8: International Centre for Research on the Environment and the Economy and the Political Economy of Sustainable Development Lab in collaboration with the Research laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) of Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) and ATHENA Research and Innovation Center.

SDSN Greece will be the 22nd national/regional network within SDSN, and is co-hosted by ICRE8: International Centre for Research on the Environment and the Economy and the Political Economy of Sustainable Development Lab. It is co-chaired by Prof. Phoebe Koundouri and Prof. Andreas Papandreou. Initiated in September 2015, SDSN Greece aims at connecting all Greek universities and research centers that are active in the field of sustainable development within the global network, in order to ultimately coordinate their efforts towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The 3rd International MED Solutions Conference will grant a valuable opportunity for the networks of the Mediterranean region to align forces on the broad topic of sustainable development in the region. The conference will provide a platform for debate and exchange of ideas across stakeholders, including network partners, policymakers and scholars.
Following the official launch of SDSN Greece, the first day will focus on the three thematic priorities of the network: Natural Capital Valuation, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development in Times of Crisis. The second day will cover the SDG Index & Dashboard for the Mediterranean, Sustainable Energy and Education Advancement around SDGs.

The double event is co-organised  by ICRE8: International Centre for Research on the Environment and the Economy and the Political Economy of Sustainable Development Lab in collaboration with  the Research laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) of Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) and ATHENA Research and Innovation Center.
